John J. Woods

Chief Executive Officer

John J. Woods is the father to four boys and husband to Janelle Blaylock Woods. John attended Tennessee Tech where he was a member of the football team. He is in his 30th year in Financial Consulting and the last twenty six years as Executive Director at Oppenheimer and Company. Prior to that, John was Vice President at Lehman Brothers.

John is a former owner of 7 Speed and Agility Facilities and owned Sports A Rama and Honeycutt Sporting Goods for 5 years. His two oldest sons played football at Kentucky and 16U football and baseball at Walton High School, as well as 643 Baseball. John has served on several committees at NYO. He is President of Friends of Chastain Park Foundation, serves on the Board at 643 Baseball Foundation and is the Chairman of Walton High School Touchdown Club. John is currently the owner of the Chattanooga Lookouts.

Jim Woods

James W. Woods

President/Principal

Born and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Jim came to Atlanta to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he played varsity football for four years and graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management.

The first four years of his business career was spent in the insurance industry with Moye Financial Associates. He started his Wall Street career at Merrill Lynch in 1981. Jim has had an extensive career of money management at Bear Stearns, Shearson Lehman Brothers, and Robinson-Humphrey Co., with his last nineteen years being spent at Oppenheimer & Co. Inc. in Atlanta, Georgia before joining Southport Capital Risk Management.

Jim and his wife Terri are now empty nesters in Marietta, Georgia, having successfully raised an attorney and two USMC officers.

Michael J. Mooney

Executive Vice President

Mike is one of the owners and serves on the Board of Directors for Southport Capital. He has over two decades of experience managing investment portfolios. He began his portfolio management career with Oppenheimer Capital, specializing in working with retired Delta and American Airline pilots. Mike’s investment philosophy for retired clients is “Principal Preservation” with a strong emphasis on value investing. His primary goal is to create an investment strategy that enables his clients to always sleep soundly at night.

Mike’s professional career began in the United States Marine Corp where he served a tour in Desert Storm as a member of the F18 Fighter Squadron. While in the USMC, Mike earned his Bachelors of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering with a minor in Business Administration. After completing his degree, Mike began his professional career with Mead Corporation where he was sponsored to attend Harvard University’s corporate management program. This is where Mike has learned many of the fundamental values he employs in his portfolio management style today.

Paul DiPalma

Chief Operating Officer

Paul has over a decade of experience in the financial services industry, starting with humble beginnings as an intern during his college years. He graduated from Florida Southern College with a degree in Business Administration. As both a Certified Income Specialist™ as well as a National Social Security Advisor Certificate Holder, Paul is meticulous in plan design for his clients. He specializes in addressing pre-retiree and post-retiree needs, helping them adjust to any life changes that affect their financial goals. Paul prides himself acting in a fiduciary capacity for his clients, ensuring their needs as well as desires are recognized and a prudent solution is implemented. Paul believes that financial freedom is available to those who learn about it and work for it.

As a resident of southwest Florida, Paul is a member of the Young Leaders Alliance, forming personal and professional relationships while building leadership skills. He is active in serving his local community with involvement in such organizations as Nate’s Honor Animal Rescue, All Faiths Food Bank and Habitat for Humanity. Paul spends his free time with nature. He enjoys doing everything from taking his dog Champ to the beach to hiking mountains at a national park.

Georgette DiPalma

Treasurer & Secretary

Georgette specializes in client administration, payroll, the maintenance of existing accounts, and any client related inquiries, boasting over 30 years of financial service experience. She consults with high net worth clients and affiliated businesses with both diligence and meticulous attention to detail at our Lakewood Ranch, FL office. She transitioned to Southport Capital from her similar role with Integrated Asset Management dating back to 2006.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Georgette attended the College of Staten Island. She began her career with Merrill Lynch in New York City teaming with brokerage traders in the Institutional Sales division, acquiring twelve years of valuable industry experience. Georgette moved on to Creative Investment Concepts in New Jersey where she managed four businesses simultaneously. At Creative Investments, she also worked hand in hand with investment brokers Oppenheimer and Franklin Templeton as the Client Services Manager.
After a lifetime of big city living, Georgette moved to Bradenton, Florida for the warm weather and its world famous beach destinations. She has a passion for bicycling and also enjoys evening walks.
